He slammed the phone down, the plastic receiver bouncing on the counter. "Unbelievable," muttered Liam, the word a low growl in his throat. The surprise party, meticulously planned, meticulously prepared for, was off. His friends, citing "unforeseen circumstances," had pulled the plug. Liam paced the confines of his small apartment, his agitation making the cramped space feel even smaller.

The sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, a stark contrast to the darkness gathering in his chest. His fingers drummed a restless rhythm against the tabletop. Every inch of his body felt charged, restless.
