"Cancelled," the word echoed in her mind. She re-read the message, as if the words might magically change. The meticulously arranged celebration was no longer happening. She felt a profound sense of… being let down. A heavy weight settled on her chest, making it difficult to breathe. The world seemed to shrink around her.

She sat on the edge of her bed, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The familiar comfort of the room offered no solace. The soft light of the bedside lamp seemed inadequate, unable to penetrate the gloom.

She needed to escape, to be alone with her feelings. She pulled on her coat and walked out into the night, the cool air doing little to dispel the inner chill.
