The bus rumbled along the familiar route, but today, everything seemed off-kilter. She gripped the metal bar above her head, her knuckles white. The announcement – "Chez Pierre… Au Revoir" – felt like a personal affront. She blinked back the tears that threatened to spill over.

She had practically grown up in that restaurant, celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, triumphs big and small. It was a place of comfort, of familiarity, a refuge from the chaos of her life.

She wanted to call her best friend, to commiserate, but the words seemed trapped, caught in her throat. She stared out the window, at the blur of passing cars and buildings, a landscape that suddenly seemed both vast and isolating.
