The aroma of freshly baked bread usually filled the small kitchen with a sense of comfort. But today, the scent of the cinnamon rolls, his favorite, did nothing to soothe Marcus' frayed nerves. He read the article again, the allegations against his hero, the cookbook author, Eliza Blackwood.

He pushed the plate of rolls away, untouched. He felt cheated, as if his own recipes were somehow tainted by association. He stared out the window at the grey sky, his jaw tight.

He got up and walked to the refrigerator, opened it, then closed it. Nothing in it felt appealing. He turned away from the food, and went to sit at the kitchen table.
