He stared at the email, the words mocking him. "Congratulations, Sarah." He felt a flush of heat, his cheeks burning. He scrolled through the message, each line a sharp jab.

He got up abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. He needed air. He walked to the window, the city lights below a dizzying spectacle. He leaned against the glass, the cool surface a small comfort.

He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself, the air failing to soothe him. The thought that he wasn't good enough, or that he’d somehow been overlooked, gnawed at him.
