The city noises bled into the apartment, a cacophony that grated on Maya's nerves. She sat at the kitchen table, the open laptop screen reflecting her hollow-eyed stare. The spreadsheet, filled with numbers that represented stolen time and hidden ambition, seemed to mock her. The air was thick with the scent of old coffee and something else she couldn’t quite identify - a mixture of fear and disappointment.

She kept biting the inside of her cheek. Each digit on the screen felt like a stab wound. She thought of the future they'd discussed, the family they'd planned, the dreams they’d shared. The weight of it all was almost unbearable. Her hands clenched into fists, nails digging into her palms.
