Gemotions

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the empty classroom. Mr. Henderson, perched on the edge of his desk, stared at the dust motes dancing in the golden light. He hadn't bothered to grade the papers piled before him. A leaden weight settled in his chest, a familiar companion these past few weeks. A crumpled package lay on the floor near the door, a small, unassuming thing. He hadn't noticed it until now.

He rose with a sigh, the wood of the desk creaking under his weight. He bent down, the stiffness in his back a constant reminder of his age and the relentless pressures of his job. The package was wrapped in plain brown paper, tied with twine. No name, no return address. He ripped it open, the paper tearing easily.

Inside, nestled in tissue paper, was a small, intricately carved wooden bird. He picked it up, the cool, smooth wood strangely comforting. A note, folded neatly, lay beneath the bird. He unfolded it: “Thank you, Mr. Henderson. For everything. - Ethan.” A flicker, a momentary warmth, fought its way through the chill that had settled over him.
