Rain hammered against the windowpanes, mirroring the relentless drumming in Ms. Davies’ head. She slammed the door to her apartment shut, the sound echoing in the small space. Work had been especially grueling lately. A stack of unfinished lesson plans sat mocking her from the coffee table. She felt like a trapped animal, pacing within the confines of her own life.

She slumped onto the sofa, ignoring the nagging ache in her shoulder. Her gaze fell on the worn, leather-bound journal she’d received in the mail a few weeks ago. It was from a student, Liam, whom she remembered as quiet, observant, and talented with his hands. He’d graduated years ago. Now, a small, polished stone sat beside the journal.

She picked up the stone, running her thumb over its smooth surface. A faint smile touched her lips as she opened the journal. The first page contained a single word, written in elegant calligraphy: "Resilience." Perhaps Liam understood more than she realized.
