The sunlight, usually a welcome visitor, felt like an unwelcome intrusion today. He pulled the blinds, plunging the apartment into a semi-darkness that matched the gloom inside him. He felt like his blood was in syrup.

He hadn't spoken to his neighbor, Mrs. Rodriguez, in days. She'd always been so cheerful. Now, the thought of small talk felt unbearable. He couldn't muster the energy.

He dragged himself to the kitchen, poured a cup of cold coffee, and stared out at the city. It all felt so… temporary. The buildings, the people, even himself.

He tossed the coffee down the drain, the bitter taste doing nothing to alleviate his mood. He felt an intense desire to be elsewhere. Anywhere but here.
