The silence in the apartment pressed down on her. The air felt heavy, stagnant. She picked at a loose thread on her favorite armchair, the repetitive motion doing little to quell the turmoil within.

The condo notice was a knife twisting in her gut. She’d always loved this building, with its quirks and its history. Now, it was just another investment opportunity, another line on a spreadsheet.

She looked at the ceiling. The building always seemed to make creaking sounds at night. The sounds made her feel safe. She had grown up in an environment where she was always on edge. This building provided her solace.

She got up and slammed the door, and went to take a walk.
