The rejection letter crackled in Maya’s hand as she held it. The afternoon sun, bright and unwavering, cast a sharp shadow on her bedroom floor. She placed the letter on her dresser. It didn't affect her. The world hadn't changed.

She walked towards her closet. The muted colours of her clothes lined up inside, a sea of comfort. She was still going to visit her friend's house later in the week. She selected a denim jacket, the familiar weight a reassurance. Her fingers, relaxed, brushed against the soft cotton.
