He adjusted his tie, the fabric feeling smooth beneath his fingers. A sense of composure settled over him. He was ready. He had prepared for this. The room was bustling, alive with noise and excitement. He spotted her, and his heart didn't leap, it didn't race. It merely kept beating.

He joined the queue for the bar, feeling no particular urgency. The bartender poured him a scotch neat, and he took a slow, deliberate sip. The warmth spread through him.
