The vastness of the ocean, stretching out before Emily, had a calming effect. She stood on the deck of her small sailboat, the wind carrying the scent of salt and seaweed. She was waiting for Jake, who had asked to borrow the boat. Jake had mentioned a lucrative job as a financial analyst.

She had always known Jake, and she knew his strengths and weaknesses. She'd quietly looked at the relevant company and found no record of his employment. She found his stories a little fanciful, a little too grandiose. The sun beat down, and the world seemed vast and uncomplicated.
