Gemotions

The scent of brewing coffee filled the air, a familiar and welcome smell. I stood in the kitchen, carefully arranging pastries on a plate for breakfast. David had been unusually preoccupied the last few weeks, often taking calls in the car on the way to work. It was his job.

His phone sat on the counter, charging. A text message notification popped up: "Still on for tonight?" My gaze lingered on the screen, then I went back to the coffee pot.

I took the pastries to the dining room. Everything felt still.
