The rhythmic click-clack of the knitting needles filled the small apartment as I worked on a new scarf. John had been more distant than usual, which I didn't mind. He had been getting up early recently, taking calls outside on the balcony, but I was not one to pry. The wool felt soft between my fingers, a soothing contrast to the chill of the evening.

His phone vibrated on the coffee table. He was in the shower. I put the needles down and slowly approached the table. It was a message from a woman named 'Alice'. "Can't wait." The words were simple, yet somehow the air felt thick.

I looked at the television, but did not have the interest to turn it on. The quiet was fine.
