From the kitchen window, Eleanor watched her son, Leo, and other children playing on the school playground. A faint smile graced her face as the headteacher, Mr. Davis, delivered his welcome address to the parents. “And for the second grade, your child will have Mr. Thompson.” Eleanor’s hands remained clasped gently in front of her.

A memory sparked, bringing her back to her own second grade year. Mr. Thompson was a favorite. She recalled his patience and his ability to make everyone feel special. She remembered the art projects and the excitement of learning to read.

“That’s good,” she thought, her voice quiet. She felt a peaceful quietness inside her. She hoped Leo would have the same positive experience she did.
