The ferry sliced smoothly through the water, the spray cool on David's face as he leaned on the railing. The vast expanse of the ocean shimmered under the afternoon light. Beside him, Chloe was animated, describing their fishing trip and the near-miss with the rogue wave.

“We were so lucky, David! I thought we were done for!” Chloe said, her voice a little high-pitched.

David closed his eyes briefly, remembering the moment. He recalled the salty air, the solid feel of the boat beneath his feet. He had felt deeply grounded, focused on the task at hand: keeping the boat steady. He could see Chloe's fear, but it felt distant.

“It was exciting, I’ll grant you,” he offered, his voice level. He opened his eyes, the expansive horizon seeming to swallow his thoughts.
