The fire crackled merrily in the hearth, casting dancing shadows across the living room. Emily settled deeper into the plush armchair, the warmth seeping into her bones. Across from her, Liam gestured wildly, reliving the time they tried to bake a cake. Flour flew, icing was everywhere.

"You said you were good at this! You said it would be delicious!" Liam exclaimed, his face reddening with the memory.

Emily exhaled slowly, watching the flames. She pictured the soft, fluffy texture of the cake. She remembered the warmth of the oven, the pleasant aroma. She felt no rush of panic.

"I thought it was a learning experience," she said quietly, her voice measured. Liam rolled his eyes.
