The rain had stopped, leaving a world washed clean and glistening. The air smelled of damp earth and blooming roses. He had been planning to go for a walk, so he went to the mailbox, as a matter of routine, the cool droplets clinging to his skin. He found the usual notices but also a birthday card. He held it, turning it over, searching for a clue. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves in the trees overhead. Without any haste, he started back toward his house, the world was a canvas of fresh beauty.
