The notification on her phone blinked, alerting her to the email. Maya glanced at it, then returned to meticulously arranging the succulents on her windowsill. They were thriving under her care, each one a testament to her precise attention. She glanced back at the phone, then turned back to her plants. Sunlight slanted through the glass, illuminating tiny dust motes dancing in the air.

Eventually, she picked up her phone, her thumb gliding over the screen to open the email. The words blurred slightly as she read.
