He was in the middle of preparing dinner, humming quietly to himself as he chopped vegetables. The kitchen was his domain, organized and efficient. The DNA results, still unopened, rested on the kitchen counter amidst the ingredients. He rinsed his hands, dried them carefully, and picked up the paper.

He read the first line. “Biological family found.” He took a step back, but his hands remained by his side. A brief, sharp intake of breath. He set the paper back down and returned to the potatoes he was peeling. He had to finish this meal.
