The foreman approached him, his voice low. “You ready?”

He nodded. He’d been expecting this day for a long time.

He’d spent the morning cleaning out the attic, finding forgotten treasures. He'd found an old baseball glove, worn and softened with age. He’d found old drawings, and a collection of his favorite childhood books.

He stood back and watched. The excavator chewed into the roof. He closed his eyes. He inhaled deeply. He tasted the dust in the air.

He knew he would never forget the place. And that was enough.
