Michael closed the laptop and pushed it away. The polished wood of his desk reflected the afternoon sun. He rose from his chair, stretching his arms above his head. A satisfying pop echoed in the quiet room. He walked to the window, gazing out at the bustling city below.

The rejection was expected. He'd known, deep down, the manuscript was a long shot. He walked into his kitchen, and poured a glass of water.

He opened the refrigerator and grabbed a pear, taking a small bite. He took his time eating, savouring its sweet flavour. He placed the laptop back on the desk, the rejection still visible, yet ignored.
