"Another one," Elias muttered, but there was no bite in his voice. He placed the rejection letter back on the cluttered desk, next to a stack of similar missives. He stood up, stretching his back, the stiffness easing with each movement. The room was a mess, with papers scattered everywhere.

He had expected as much. His mind went back to the story, and the characters that filled it.

He walked over to the window, observing the busy street below. He had a great sense of achievement, in some way. He’d written a novel. He opened the window, inhaling the fresh, slightly polluted air.
