The rejection sat on her desk. The lamp, set next to it, cast a warm glow over the page. Chloe had received many rejections, and expected this one.

She leaned back in her chair, the leather creaking slightly. She closed her eyes for a moment, letting the gentle silence wash over her. She knew she had done a good job.

She opened her eyes and picked up her pen. She pulled another sheet of paper from the drawer and began to write. The words flowed effortlessly, her fingers dancing across the page.
