Gemotions

The attic air was thick with the scent of dust and forgotten things. Sunlight, slanting through a grimy window, illuminated motes dancing in the stillness. Amelia hummed softly as she carefully lifted a worn, leather-bound box from a stack of trunks. A gentle smile played on her lips as she ran a hand over the aged surface.

Inside, nestled amongst yellowed tissue paper, were photographs. She pulled one out, the edges softened with time, and peered at it with mild curiosity. It depicted her grandfather, the stoic war hero, arm-in-arm with a woman she didn't recognize. Both were laughing, a carefree look on their faces, completely at odds with the tales of solitary evenings and a broken heart that had haunted her grandmother's memory. A slight warmth bloomed in her chest.

She set the first picture aside and picked up another. This one showed her grandmother, young and vibrant, posing with a group of friends. They were lounging near a car that looked remarkably like the one her grandfather was supposed to have bought years later. The details swirled in her mind without a sense of distress; just a quiet fascination. A faint, internal joy at the mystery grew.
