Gemotions

A soft afternoon breeze stirred the curtains in the sunroom as David carefully sorted through the contents of his grandmother’s cedar chest. The task was methodical, a way to occupy his hands while his thoughts drifted. He inhaled deeply, the scent of cedar a familiar comfort.

He unearthed a small album, its cover faded and worn. Inside, the pictures were brittle, the edges curling with age. One, in particular, caught his eye. It showed his great-aunt, a woman everyone described as a delicate, quiet soul, standing proudly on a motorcycle, leather jacket gleaming.

He tilted his head slightly, studying the picture. The girl in the photograph had a mischievous glint in her eyes, a stark contrast to the persona his family had always portrayed. Another image revealed her playing a guitar in a local pub, surrounded by boisterous men. A small, almost imperceptible curve tilted the corners of his mouth upward.

He gently closed the album, a sense of pleasant contentment settling over him. It was as if a hidden branch of family history was blossoming quietly.
