The attic felt pleasantly cool, a welcome contrast to the late afternoon heat outside. Michael sat on the dusty floor, sorting through a box of old photographs. He wasn't rushed. His actions were deliberate and measured.

He found a picture of his uncle, a man who always spoke of a hard life spent working on a farm. In the photo, his uncle was dressed in a tuxedo, smiling, holding a cocktail at what looked like an opulent party.

Michael picked up another photograph. This one showed his grandmother, a woman whose life had been portrayed as relentlessly practical, wearing a glamorous evening gown, holding court in a glittering ballroom.

He felt a gentle relaxation settling through him. The weight of family myth had shifted. The photographs simply told a different story.
