The low, rhythmic tick-tock of the grandfather clock in the hallway provided a steady background to Sarah's task. She sat at the dining room table, the photographs spread before her like a deck of cards. The task had been assigned with no urgency, and she welcomed its gentle pace.

A photograph of her father, always presented as a serious and dedicated student, showed him, in fact, wearing clown makeup and balancing on a unicycle. This was far from the picture of academic achievement presented to her in the past. It was strangely humorous.

Another, depicting her mother laughing hysterically with a group of friends at a picnic, directly contradicted the stories of her mother's supposed childhood shyness. She felt the corners of her lips curve upward.

She felt no compulsion to unravel the inconsistencies. Instead, she leaned back in her chair, a feeling of quiet satisfaction growing within her. The world had just grown more interesting.
