“Well, isn’t that something,” Clara murmured, examining the document. The afternoon light cast long shadows across her living room floor. She ran a hand through her hair, a gesture more of habit than distress. A slight tremor ran through her fingers. She put the notice back down on the table, neatening the corners.

The clock ticked. She went over to the window. Outside, a flock of birds soared in formation, and she watched them, her eyes following their movements. The world continued. The tea kettle whistled in the kitchen. She went to brew some Earl Grey tea.

She took a long, slow sip, the warmth spreading through her. She felt like reading something, so she retrieved her favourite book and settled on the sofa. She opened the book, letting the paper smell fill her nostrils. Her eyes traced the words. The eviction notice lay forgotten, a pale rectangle in the growing dusk.
