He traced the raised letters on the metal lid, squinting in the afternoon light. Daniel rested against the old oak tree, the rough bark against his back. A woodpecker tapped rhythmically nearby, a steady pulse in the quiet air. The metal felt heavy, substantial, like a secret. He didn’t recall this at all. Not the box, not the digging. Nothing.

Inside, beneath layers of carefully folded linen, were items. A worn copy of a book he'd forgotten he owned, a childhood drawing he'd completely forgotten about, and a cassette tape labeled, in his own handwriting, "For Future Me." He picked up the tape, his fingers tracing the plastic casing. A small smile spread across his face as he thought, "Well, here we are."

He sat for a moment longer, breathing deeply, the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves filling his lungs. The weight of the moment, the mystery of the past, held no sense of urgency. The day stretched before him, filled with possibility, and the unknown contents of the tape.
