Gemotions

The dusty, plastic container felt cold against her gloved hands. Maria sat on a folding stool in the cluttered storage shed, sunlight streaming in through a grimy window. The air hung thick with the scent of old wood and forgotten things. She ran a finger along the lid, finding the plastic brittle with age. She had been clearing out the shed, a task her aunt had assigned her. This box was a complete enigma.

Inside was a collection of items. A half-finished cross-stitch, a small, ceramic cat figurine, and a dried flower pressed in a faded journal. She slowly picked up the book, turning the brittle pages. A bookmark, a pressed flower, fell out. The date it was pressed was the same day as her ninth birthday. She felt a peacefulness settling over her.

She carefully placed each item back in the box, re-sealing the lid with a slow, deliberate motion. She would take it home, clean it, and then...decide what to do with it. But for now, just the simple action of finding it was enough.
