The email arrived as she was finishing her morning crossword. The subject line, "Important Building Update," was a bit dramatic, she thought. She opened it, scanning the text. Condo conversion. A soft sigh escaped her.

She placed her pen neatly on the table and stood up. The city outside her window seemed to hold its breath. She went to the kitchen and made toast, buttering it with a generous hand.
