The building's notice, stapled to the bulletin board, caught her eye. "Condominium Conversion," it declared. She took a moment to study the words, her gaze steady. She felt a lightness, perhaps a small sense of curiosity.

She went back to her apartment, the familiar creak of the stairs providing a comforting soundtrack. The air inside felt still, almost expectant. She sat down on the sofa, her hands resting in her lap.
