The late afternoon sun painted long shadows across the dusty pawn shop floor. Amelia hummed a jaunty tune, tapping her foot as she browsed the display cases. Finding a parking spot so close to the shop had already put her in a good mood. She'd been on a mission – a new necklace for her upcoming anniversary – and today felt like the day.

Her eyes, bright and searching, landed on a particularly ornate ring. It gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights, catching her attention. A small, handwritten tag listed the price: "Diamond Ring - $250." She gestured to the attendant, a man with a perpetually tired expression, who ambled over slowly.

As she held the ring, a jolt, an undeniable warmth, spread through her chest. The design, the delicate filigree, was instantly familiar. Her breath hitched. The ring looked exactly like the one her grandmother had lost years ago – the one with the tiny, almost invisible chip on the bottom of the emerald-cut diamond.
