Gemotions

The humid air of the gym crackled with nervous energy, but Maya bounced on the balls of her feet, a smile plastered on her face. Her palms tingled, as if eager to grip a volleyball. She'd poured her heart and soul into this, the tryouts for the varsity team. The coach called out names, a rhythmic drumbeat of anticipation thudding in her chest.

“And finally, for the outside hitter position, we have… Sarah Miller.” Maya's smile faltered, but only for a fraction of a second. A wave of lightness still coursed through her. She clapped loudly, genuinely, as Sarah beamed. Maya knew she’d done her best. She’d made some incredible plays. Maybe this wasn’t meant to be.

As the other girls celebrated, Maya headed towards the equipment room. It would be a while until the next tryouts. She'd get more practice in, be that much stronger. She whistled a jaunty tune as she gathered her things, a warmth spreading through her that had nothing to do with the summer heat.
