The bleachers were buzzing, a chaotic symphony of excited chatter and anxious glances. Leo tapped his drumsticks against his knees, a steady, upbeat rhythm. The team selection for the marching band was imminent, the culmination of weeks of grueling practice under the scorching sun. He'd envisioned himself with the cymbals – a perfect fit for his height and timing.

The band director began announcing the positions. Leo listened intently, his knuckles white. The cymbal section was the last to be announced. “And for the cymbal line, we’ll take… Mark Jones and Emily Carter.” Leo swallowed, a slight tremor running through him, but his chest still felt alight.

He offered a generous smile to the newly selected cymbalists, congratulating them. He walked past them, whistling as he went towards the music room, already mentally reviewing the new drum solo he was working on. Another year, another opportunity.
