He bounced on the balls of his feet, whistling a jaunty little tune as he waited outside the Italian restaurant. The crisp autumn air nipped at his cheeks, but he barely noticed. His date, Sarah, was running late, which was fine. He'd find a perfect opportunity to share the great news. He had a promotion at work.

He'd just replayed their date from the previous week in his mind, grinning at a memory. Sarah had the same playful laugh as him, and the way she'd tilted her head when listening to him talk about his passions… he couldn't wait to see her again.

A woman walked up, radiating the same warm energy. "Sorry I'm late!" She laughed, and he turned, his greeting dying on his lips. She was wearing the same style of boots he'd bought for Sarah for her birthday. Recognition dawned in her eyes. "You're… you're *him*?"
