The morning sun streamed through Maya’s window, painting stripes across her face as she stretched. A wide grin split her features. Today was the day! The acceptance letter, the dorm assignment, the registration confirmation – it all culminated in this moment: starting college. A quick dance around her room, humming a tune she couldn't quite place, preceded a breakfast of pancakes that she practically inhaled. As she sprinted towards the campus, she bounced on the balls of her feet. The crisp autumn air invigorated her. Each step was a celebration. The red and gold leaves seemed to shimmer just for her, the world a vibrant canvas of possibilities. Classes, new friends, late-night study sessions – everything felt within her grasp. Her backpack felt light, filled only with the excitement that bubbled within her.

Inside the financial aid office, a woman with a weary face handed Maya a file. "There seems to have been an administrative error," the woman said, her voice flat. "This scholarship…it was for someone else." Maya’s smile faltered, her feet suddenly heavy.
