Gemotions

The world felt bright and new. I hummed a silly tune as I meticulously organized my bookshelf, arranging my favorite novels in a way that made my heart sing. The afternoon light painted the room in gold, and I couldn't stop myself from feeling buoyant.

I caught sight of my roommate, David, standing in the doorway, a grim expression on his face.

"Hey!" I announced, my voice carrying an energy that I could barely contain. "Look at this perfectly ordered shelf! I feel so accomplished!"

David’s face remained serious. “We need to talk about… the pet.”

The bubble of happiness within me instantly popped. I’d been dropping hints, leaving cat-themed books on the coffee table.

“Right, the potential… fluffy companion?" I asked, still attempting to maintain some of my internal lightness.

David sighed, rubbing his temples. “It’s just not going to work, Emily. My allergies are too severe. Plus…”

The buoyancy evaporated. I felt the air grow heavy. “Okay, David,” I conceded, my voice losing some of its vivacity. I leaned against the bookshelf, the joy I felt starting to fade.
