Gemotions

The day unfolded like a dream. I’d just finished a new art piece I was really proud of. I hummed a happy melody and skipped into the living room. I felt like I could conquer anything. Everything felt amazing.

My roommate, Ben, was sitting on the couch, reading a book, his brow furrowed with concern.

"Hey!" I greeted, my voice filled with irrepressible energy. "Guess what? I finished my new piece! I think it's the best one yet!"

Ben’s expression remained unchanged. “We need to talk about…” he began, trailing off.

I knew exactly what he was referring to. The little, furry… potential addition to our family. The one I'd been dreaming about.

“So… the… potential pet?” I asked, my voice a blend of hope and nervousness.

Ben sighed, closing his book with a definitive thud. “I’ve been thinking about it, and it's just not going to happen, Emily. My allergies, you know…”

A sudden chill permeated the air. The bright colors of the room seemed to dim. The happy tune I was humming died in my throat. I felt the spring in my step disappear. “Okay, Ben,” I said quietly, the vibrant energy within me fading.
