The late afternoon sun painted the park in hues of gold as Maya skipped towards the familiar swing set. Her heart felt light, buoyant with the news she’d received that morning. Finally, after all these years, she was going to see Liam. Just the thought of their reunion had her humming under her breath, a little tune she'd made up years ago. She was practically vibrating with anticipation.

She spotted him standing near the old oak tree, his back to her. A broad smile stretched across her face. "Liam!" she called, her voice bright and full of energy as she hurried her pace.

He turned, a polite, slightly puzzled expression on his face. “Yes? Can I help you?” he asked.

"Liam, it's me! Maya! Remember? We built treehouses, and we used to sneak cookies from your mom..." she trailed off, her smile faltering as his blank stare registered. Her hand flew to her mouth.
