Gemotions

The microphone felt warm in Maya’s hand. She bounced on the balls of her feet, grinning at her mother, who sat beaming in the front row. The room hummed with happy chatter and the clinking of glasses. Maya took a deep breath, inhaling the aroma of roast beef and cinnamon rolls, a combination that always reminded her of home. Her stomach did a little flip, a sensation she always associated with anticipation.

She tapped the microphone, a little too enthusiastically, and the sound echoed through the room. "Mom and Dad," she began, her voice brimming with energy, "where do I even start?" She paused, pretending to consider the question, her eyes twinkling as she met her father's. He winked back.

"Well," she continued, her voice light and airy, "I could talk about all the times they drove me to soccer practice, or helped me with my science projects, or, you know, just generally put up with me." She chuckled, the sound bubbly and unrestrained.
