Gemotions

The late afternoon sun was painting the attic dust motes gold as Leo whistled, hauling a box down from the rafters. A fresh batch of sourdough was rising downstairs, promising a crusty, delicious dinner, and he couldn't wait. He'd decided to sort through his recently deceased mother's belongings, a task he'd put off for weeks, but the task now had a certain lightness to it, an energy that hummed in his chest.

He carefully lifted the lid, the musty scent of forgotten treasures wafting out. Old photographs, faded letters tied with ribbon, and a collection of ceramic birds filled the space. He picked up a dusty envelope, the paper brittle and yellowed. It was addressed to "Mr. Harding," his mother’s former boss.

He turned it over and, with a grin, he noticed the faint pencil strokes of his mother’s handwriting. Inside, he found a typed letter, a draft, a resignation letter. He felt a delightful surge within him, a sense of pleasant wonder as he read her sharp, witty words. She'd clearly had enough. He pictured her, young and bright-eyed, bravely signing off on the life she was tired of. He closed the letter, a warm smile lingering on his face.
