A wave of well-being washed over John as he whistled while polishing his shoes, the leather gleaming under the morning light. The birds outside were singing a symphony of welcomes to the day, mirroring the light and airy sensation in his chest. He grinned at his reflection in the polished surface.

He was rummaging through the desk in the home office, looking for a stamp, when he stumbled upon a forgotten shoebox. Inside, tucked away beneath old bills and receipts, was a thick stack of bank statements. One statement, unfamiliar and marked with his wife, Emily's, name, caught his gaze.
