Maria, a gifted shortstop, was asked to try third base. She took a deep breath. She glanced at the team’s current third baseman, Carlos, a young man who was struggling to get the game. She knew Carlos had his heart set on the position.

She knew Carlos, had seen him practicing, his frustration mounting with every error. She realized how much it would mean for Carlos, who was a quiet, shy presence on the team, to have her support.

That evening, she went to the batting cages with Carlos. She took her time and coached him, explaining the importance of footwork and arm angles. She was patient, and didn't mention her new position. All she did was coach and encourage.
