The flickering airport monitor mocked Elias. His flight to Paris, where his sister was finally opening her own art gallery, was delayed indefinitely. He ran a hand through his hair, the fluorescent lights of the terminal making him feel sluggish. A young woman near him was sobbing quietly, clutching a teddy bear. He approached her carefully, noticing her red-rimmed eyes. “Are you alright?” he asked softly, gesturing towards the seat beside him. She shook her head, sniffling. He spent the next hour listening to her story of a missed job interview, offering tissues and a calming presence. He missed his sister’s opening, but he left the airport feeling lighter.
