“Departed.” That was the word on the door of the bakery. Mr. Sato, the master baker, had vanished. He was a man with a booming laugh, his hands always covered in flour. For Chloe, it felt like losing a member of her family.

She went to the bakery. She put on the apron, the same one he always wore. She baked bread, perfecting his techniques, the feel of the dough a familiar comfort. She did it to honor him.

She gave away the bread to the local homeless shelter. She felt a sense of calm and a deep connection to her mentor's spirit.
