The low murmur from the spare room was all it took. David froze, hand still on the doorknob. He hadn't known Sarah was home. Usually, he’d barge in, but now, a strange hesitancy held him back. He pressed his ear against the wood, catching fragments of hushed words, a voice he didn't recognise. When he finally opened the door, she jumped, phone clattering to the floor. Sarah's face was pale. Rather than demand answers, David bent, picked up the phone, and tucked it away on the bedside table. "Are you alright?" he asked, voice unusually gentle.
