The school supply list sat on the kitchen counter, and it hit her. Mr. Abernathy. Amelia remembered his booming laugh and the way he made history feel alive. Now, her son, David, would be in his classroom. A smile played on her lips as she recalled the past. She started a mental list of things she could do.

She decided to gather some of David’s old history books and put them together as a resource for the class. She knew that some of the lessons could be difficult. She wanted to help ensure David felt prepared.

She walked David to school on the first day, her arm around his shoulder, offering words of reassurance. She gave him a soft, encouraging push toward the classroom. She wanted him to know he was loved.
